can someone explain to me how comic book characters have a million different backstories?

do writers and directors and stuff just come up with stuff at will? are they alternate universes? I don’t get it. example how can different people write Selina Kyle however they want??

  1. ludlow-dreams answered: DC just did a reboot of all their characters. Everyone has a basic backstory but it differs from universes and series. ex: There’s an Earth2.
  2. blonicstraightedgehog answered: because most comic book heros have more than one identity. Once one of the identity of the super hero dies, another person takes his/her role
  3. lebatcrazed answered: Different universes and different story arcs. core backstories are usually the same, however it’s annoying when they mess with timelines lol
